10 Safety Tips Before You Hire Equipment

Hired gear can do some serious damage if it's not used the right way, to you, to others, or to the job itself. A bit of common sense goes a long way. Here are ten things worth knowing before you fire anything up.

1. Actually Read the Manual

Sounds boring, but it matters. Mega Hire's gear, from Hilti jackhammers to Genie boom lifts to Bobcat skid steers, is proper commercial-grade kit. Spend five minutes with the operator's manual before you start. Not sure about something? Ring the team on 1300 546 122 before you wing it.

2. Gear Up Properly

Steel caps, safety glasses, gloves, earmuffs, sort your PPE before you start, not after something goes wrong. Running a jackhammer without hearing protection is a bad idea. Same goes for eye protection on a pressure washer. Different machines, different hazards, know what's needed for each.

3. Give the Gear a Once-Over Before You Start

Check for any obvious damage, loose bits, frayed cables, or missing guards before you get stuck in. If something doesn't look right, call Mega Hire straight away, don’t just hope for the best. It's not worth it.

4. Call Before You Dig

This is non-negotiable in Queensland. Before you put a Bobcat, Dingo, or vacuum excavator anywhere near the ground, ring Dial Before You Dig on 1100. It's free, it's quick, and it could save you from hitting a gas line or power cable. There's no excuse for skipping this one.

5. Use It for What It's Built For

Every bit of Mega Hire's gear has a rated capacity and a designed purpose. Don't overload a trailer, don't push a lift past its working limit, and don't use a compactor as a wheel stop. Improvising with machinery is how things go sideways, and how you end up paying for damage you didn't need to cause.

6. Keep the Area Clear

Before you fire up anything noisy or moving, make sure kids, pets, and anyone who doesn't need to be there is well out of the way. For work on a footpath or road in Brisbane, check in with Brisbane City Council about what's required for traffic management, it’s not something to guess at.

7. Don't Push Through When You're Cooked

Queensland summers are no joke. If you're running a jackhammer or operating a scissor lift and you're already exhausted, stop and take a break. Fatigue causes accidents, it’s that simple. Drink water, take a spell in the shade, and never get behind the controls if you've had a few drinks or taken anything that affects your focus.

8. Don't Overload Your Access Equipment

When you're up on scaffolding, a trestle, or a Mega Hire scissor lift or boom lift, the working load limit includes you, your tools, and everything else you're carrying. Don't forget to account for all of it. A fall from height is a life-changing event, the load rating is there for good reason.

9. Handle Fuel the Right Way

A fair chunk of Mega Hire's gear runs on petrol, the pressure washer, the demolition saw, the rotary hoe. Use an approved container, keep fuel well away from anything that could spark, and never top up a hot engine. Follow the WorkSafe Queensland guidelines and you'll be right.

10. Return It Clean and Be Straight About Any Issues

Give the gear a clean before you return it and flag any damage or faults honestly. It's good form, it protects whoever hires it next, and Mega Hire can get it serviced before it goes back out. Nobody expects perfection, just honesty. Check out the Hiring Terms and Conditions at megahire.com.au if you want the full picture.
