Grinding concrete

“Mega Hire supplies equipment with the best quality blades and consumables to maximise the performance of your hired equipment”

Mega Hire includes the cost of 1mm of diamond disc wear per day, or 5mm per week, in the hire price for concrete floor grinders. The discs are measured with a vernier scale before and after use to calculate the disc wear.

We are asked frequently about how much you can cut / grind with 1mm of usage. The correct, but unhelpful answer, is “how long is a piece of string?”. Diamond disc usage is dependent on a large range of variables such as the age of the concrete, the aggregate used, the concrete strength (25MPA, or 35MPA), even how the concrete was finished when it was poured, but also how the equipment is used. Unlike some hire companies, Mega Hire uses the highest quality consumables in our equipment, so you can be guaranteed you get the most out of your hire.

The hand-held Hilti DG 1500 grinder includes 1mm of wear on a daily rate and 5mm of diamond wear on a weekly rate. Basic information on the handheld grinder can be found at the Hilti website

A range of discs are available with varying grit densities, bond strengths and numbers of segments to suit different applications. Selecting the correct disc depends on the task and required finish.

Typically, it is best to start with a 30grit White disc (hard bond) and assess the wear rates and concrete grind as you progress. If progress is limited, this may be due to the hardness of the concrete, so switch to a 30grit Black disc (soft bond) which will respond better to hard concrete. For removing coatings such as tile glue or epoxy coatings, typically discs with less segments work better as they have larger open areas to disperse the material that is being removed (orange disc with three segments is recommended).

Once the surface has been ground down to show the aggregate with the course discs (black or white), the next step is to finely grind the concrete with an 80grit and then 150grit for a perfectly smooth finish. Following this, resin pads can be used for the final polishing step. Refer to our concrete polishing guide for further information.

Feel free to inquire for advice on selecting the best set up for your application.

Wear is charged as follows (per mm):

Concrete Floor Grinder 250mm - $55 (inc GST)

Concrete Floor Grinder 480mm - $35 (inc GST) per disc (the machine uses three discs at once)

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver to my site?

Every product on our website can be delivered to your site. Transport pricing is available on the product pages - simply enter in your suburb and the transport price (each way) will be displayed. If you are situated outside the greater Brisbane area, please call us for a quote.

How do you charge for weekend hires?

A weekend hire consists of a 1 day hire cost (with 8 machine hours) over the entire weekend. You are more than welcome to collect either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning and return Monday morning for just a 1 day charge!

How do you store my information?

The identification process is done via ‘Stripe’. Stripe confirms a user's identity online by analysing government-issued IDs and biometric selfies. This data is then stored externally by Stripe using measures such as encryption and tokenization to keep data safe.

Card details are also stored externally with Commbank - providing us with a token which allows us to process payments and/or refunds directly to your card without having access or storing sensitive data.

Can I return after hours?

We are able to provide you with a 1 time gate code which allows you to drop off your equipment after hours if you are unable to in normal business hours (subject to certain machines/equipment).

Do I require any machine licences to hire?

No! We do not require any proof of licensing (other than machines that require drivers licenses) however, please double check with the site you are working on first as it may be a requirement.

Do you take security deposits?

Yes! But not on all items.

For customers that do not have a credit account with us, we do also take a security deposit in addition to the hire fee before the equipment is released. This is typically just for high-value items (such as earthmoving machines) or concrete grinders (which can attract additional charges for excess diamond usage).

Once the equipment has been returned, we will inspect it/refuel it etc and return the deposit minus any additional charges (like fuel/damage/cleaning charges).

What are your hire rates and how are they calculated?

The hire rates are calculated for each product individually. Typically there are per day and per week rates. The total price for the hire period is the number of days multiplied by the day rate, up to the value of the weekly rate. Once the value reaches the weekly rate then that rate is used.

If you have a long term hire or are a high-volume hirer, please call our office to get a specific quote for the equipment you need. The more you hire, or the longer the hire term, you will be eligable for more competitive rates.

How do I pay for my hire?

If you order online, you will be prompted to pay via credit card on checkout.

If you make a booking over the phone, we will send you an invoice with a payment link that you can click on to make payment by credit card.

You can also make payment by EFT in advance of the hire if you prefer.

Payments must be made in full before the equipment can go on hire.

How do trade accounts work?

You can apply for a trade account by completing our account application form and emailing it to us. Once approved, you can enjoy hiring on 30 day credit terms. You can download our application form here.

Trade accounts are approved based on several criteria related to the financial history of your business.

What condition is the equipment in at the start of the hire?

All machines and equipment are checked thoroughly before they are made available for hire. They will start the hire clean and full of fuel.

For higher value machines (earthmoving, compaction etc), we take pre-hire photos. The customer can view the pre-hire inspection by simply scanning the QR code on the equipment that they have on hire. You can even download it in PDF format to keep for your own record.

What's your cancellation policy?

You can cancel at any time before the hire is due to start. Additional charges will only apply if the equipment is being delivered and it has already been loaded onto a vehicle and left our yard.

Always try to let us know at least the day before if you would like to postpone or cancel your hire.

Are there delivery charges?

Delivery pricing is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. The transport price on checkout is an estimate only - when you place an order, our staff need to check it to ensure all the items you have ordered will fit within the delivery price quoted.

Only occasiionally do we need to increase the delivery price on your online order. It typically only happens if the order contains several different items and our staff need to check dimensions/weight to ensure it can fit on the delivery vehicle that the price allowed for. 99% of online orders will go through with the delivery price as quoted.

How do I return the equipment?

You can either return the equipment yourself to our yard, or we can collect it from your site.

You can choose which option you want in advance, but if you change your mind simply call us and we can update the transport as you wish.
